IRS Payment Plans
If you owe federal taxes but cannot pay the full balance at once, an IRS payment plan may let you pay over time. The right option depends on your balance, filing history, income, expenses, and any collection deadlines. Review the basics below, then schedule a consultation if you want help understanding which path may fit.

What an IRS payment plan does
An installment agreement is an arrangement to pay a tax balance in scheduled payments. Individuals and businesses may have different options and requirements. Approval is not automatic, and the IRS may require all required tax returns to be filed and current tax deposits or estimated payments to stay current.

Common payment options
Short-term payment plan: A limited period to pay the balance in full. It may help when you can resolve the debt soon but need more time than the original due date.
Long-term installment agreement: Monthly payments over a longer period. Payment amount, fees, eligibility, and application steps depend on your circumstances.
Direct debit: Automatic withdrawals can reduce the chance of missed payments and may be required for some arrangements.
Other resolution options: If monthly payments are not affordable, ask whether another approach, such as an offer in compromise or currently-not-collectible status, may apply.
What to consider before applying
Interest and applicable penalties generally continue until the balance is paid. A payment plan may not stop every collection action already in progress, and missing payments or new unpaid tax can put an agreement at risk. If you received a levy warning, a final notice, or a hearing deadline, get help promptly because response periods can be short.
